Hosting Work Experience in our Electrical Department

This week, we’ve been hosting Charlie, a GCSE student from Pensby High School, on a week-long Work Experience placement with our Electrical Department.

Charlie has been out on site at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool, alongside our Electrical Project Manager, Greg Percival, where he was able to learn about the intelligent lighting systems, designed for energy efficiency and dynamic lighting capabilities for events like the Eurovision Song Contest.

He was also able to see the LED Lighting upgrades completed by our Electrical team, which included replacing 198 fluorescent light fittings with LED equivalents across a mixture of lamppost lighting and floor lights around the Arena, open car park area and the waterfront.

Back at our Head Office, Charlie has assisted our Electrical Engineers with our own office refurbishment and has been working alongside Electrical Project Engineer Oksana Dmytryshena reviewing drawings and helping with project takeoffs!

Through work experience placements like this, students are able to get a better understanding of the options available to them. Charlie tells us that he had no awareness of the commercial work that we carry out and it’s now something he’s going to consider. He still wants to be on the tools and not office based though!

Work experience helps bridge the gap between education and industry and help students understand how what they’re learning at school, translates to the world of work.

It’s also a great way for employers like us to develop a pipeline of talent by signposting eager students like Charlie on to a local vocational college and on to an apprenticeship pathway. Hopefully we’ll be seeing Charlie back at some point in the future!
